Architectural Shingles vs 3 Tab: What Holds Up in Columbia

Architectural shingles beat 3-tab on almost every count that matters here. Wind, algae, warranty and looks all go to architectural. Owens Corning rates its Supreme 3-tab shingle for 60 mph wind and its TruDefinition Duration architectural shingle for 160 mph (Owens Corning spec sheets). That gap is the whole story for a Midlands roof. 3-tab still makes sense in a few cases, and we’ll name them.

What’s the actual difference between them?

A 3-tab shingle is one flat layer. An architectural shingle is two layers laminated together.

You can see it from the street. 3-tab lays down in neat, even rows. Each strip is cut into three tabs, so the roof looks like a grid. Architectural shingles have uneven tabs stacked on a second layer. That gives the roof shadow lines and depth.

The build is different too. A square of Supreme 3-tab takes 80 shingles at a 5-inch exposure. A square of Duration takes 64 shingles at 5 5/8 inches (Owens Corning). Each piece is bigger and thicker.

Which one stands up to Columbia wind?

Architectural wins by a wide margin. The 3-tab line is rated for 60 mph. The architectural line is rated for 160 mph.

Read the fine print on that 160, though. Owens Corning says it applies “when Owens Corning component requirements are met and with starter shingles installed on both the eaves and rakes.” So the number depends on the install. A sloppy crew can cost you that rating.

Why does that matter here? Our summer thunderstorms throw gusts that lift tabs. A flat 3-tab shingle has one layer to catch. Once a tab lifts and creases, water gets under it.

How does humidity change the choice?

Algae is the Midlands problem nobody plans for. Those black streaks on roofs around Columbia are algae, and our heat and humidity feed them.

Algae protection is built into the shingle. The 3-tab line carries 10 years of algae resistance. The architectural line carries 25 (Owens Corning). On a shaded lot in Lexington or Irmo, those extra years show up as a cleaner roof.

How long does each one last?

The warranty is the honest place to start. Supreme 3-tab carries a 25-year limited warranty. Duration carries a limited lifetime warranty (Owens Corning).

A warranty isn’t a lifespan, and real life runs shorter in our sun. Attic ventilation, roof pitch and storm history all pull the number down. Our article on how long a roof lasts walks through those factors for Columbia homes.

When does a 3-tab roof still make sense?

Sometimes it does. If you’re selling the house soon and the roof just has to pass inspection, 3-tab can do the job. Same for a detached shed or garage where looks don’t count.

It also matters for repairs. If your roof is already 3-tab and only one slope took damage, we match what’s there. Mixing styles on one roof looks patched.

But are 3-tab shingles discontinued? Not across the board, no. Owens Corning still lists Supreme today. The choice is shrinking, though, and color matching gets harder every year.

Which one should you put on your house?

For a full replacement in the Midlands, go architectural. The wind rating, the algae protection and the warranty all point the same way. It also looks better from the curb.

FAQ

Are architectural shingles vs 3 tab worth the upgrade in South Carolina? Yes, for most homes. You get a higher wind rating, longer algae protection and a longer warranty.

Can you put architectural shingles over 3-tab shingles? Sometimes, but we don’t recommend it. A tear-off lets us check the decking for rot underneath.

Do architectural shingles need a special install? They need the manufacturer’s starter strips and nailing pattern. That’s how the higher wind rating applies.

Why does my 3 tab roof have black streaks? That’s algae, and humidity feeds it. 3-tab algae resistance runs out sooner than architectural.

Will my insurance company care which shingle I have? It can affect how they view your roof. Ask your agent directly, since every policy is different.
